CalmCompanion

An AI (artificial intelligence) tool designed around how you work, so you do not have to hide it to fit in. It is a companion we are building around your NeuroProfile results, your pace, and your energy.

In development

What is CalmCompanion?

CalmCompanion is an AI companion: a computer program you write messages to, and it writes back. It adapts to your NeuroProfile results, your communication style, and your pace. NeuroProfile is the free questionnaire you can take on SensoryShore today.

Status: in development

CalmCompanion is not yet available. We cannot give a date for it yet. This page describes what we are building and the safety rules it will follow, so you can decide whether it interests you.

When CalmCompanion is ready, it will use an AI service run by a company called Anthropic, which processes data outside the UK. It does not use points, badges, or streaks (counting how many days in a row you use it) to keep you coming back. It does not make you feel guilty for taking a break. It does not expect you to think or talk like a non-autistic person. It does not put on false friendliness. It uses plain, literal, and predictable language.

Your results

It starts from your NeuroProfile results

If you choose to use CalmCompanion, it receives a summary of your NeuroProfile results that does not include your name or email address. It does not receive your full list of answers. Most of the summary is worked out from groups of answers. Three items each come from your answer to one question: how you prefer to communicate, the pace you prefer in conversation, and whether you have deep interests (special interests). Your results page shows what this summary contains. When you write to CalmCompanion, what you write is sent to its AI service too, along with the summary of your results.

Sensory

The things that overwhelm your senses most

Sensory triggers are things around you that overwhelm your senses, such as loud sounds, bright lights, strong smells, or certain textures. CalmCompanion suggests strategies and pacing that take account of the ones you find hardest.

Masking

Your masking & assimilation patterns

Masking means hiding or changing how you naturally act, so that you fit in with other people. Assimilation means forcing yourself through situations that do not fit you. CalmCompanion takes account of how much energy this costs you, and slows its pace to match.

Routine

How much routine and change affect you

The summary includes your routine and flexibility band. CalmCompanion takes account of how much you rely on routine, and does not change topic suddenly.

Communication

Your preferred pacing & style

Literal, predictable communication at the pace and length you choose.

Safety

Safety that sits outside the AI

CalmCompanion's safety checks are fixed rules written by people. They run separately from the AI. If the checks spot signs of a crisis, the AI is not used at all.

What happens in a crisis

CalmCompanion's safety rules have three levels: yellow, amber, and red. Red is the most serious. At red, the AI stops. You see a message that a person wrote in advance. It lists crisis services you can contact straight away. CalmCompanion will not be made available until its safety rules have been tested.

CalmCompanion is not available yet, and SensoryShore has no helpline. If you or someone else is in danger now, call 999. For urgent help that is not an emergency, call NHS 111 (NHS is the National Health Service). To talk to someone at any time, call Samaritans free on 116 123. If you would rather text than call, text SHOUT to 85258 (Shout is a free text service). These services are not part of SensoryShore. Read the safety page.

To be clear: CalmCompanion is an AI tool. It is not a person, and it is not a therapist. It does not diagnose autism or any other condition. It is meant to help with daily life, including while you wait for an autism assessment.
